Dr. Nigil Haroon, MD, PhD, is the Co-Director of the spondylitis program at the University Health Network and an associate professor of medicine and rheumatology at the University of Toronto. He is a scientist at the Krembil Research Institute, a state of the art research facility in Toronto.
Dr. Haroon is an internationally renowned clinician scientist in the field of Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS). He is well published in this area and has been an invited speaker in several international meetings. He has held several leadership positions including Chairing the Wait Time Alliance Committee of the Canadian Rheumatology Association. Dr. Haroon has won several awards including the Jane Bruckel Award of the Spondylitis Association of America and the Young Investigator Award of the Canadian Rheumatology Association.
Dr. Haroon has a well-established translational research program in the University Health Network, Toronto and is known for his work in functional genomics of AS. He has published paradigm-shifting studies in AS including the work on disease modification in AS with TNF inhibitors and the largest population based study in AS that showed a significant increased risk of AS patients dying from heart attacks and strokes.
